- Why Us
After thirty-six years of active, hands-on trade work, owner Ryan Hix has learned that homeowners remember more than just the final aesthetic. They remember whether you showed up, listened to what they wanted, communicated clearly, and treated their home with care.
Those lessons shape the way we work at Astra Yah Handyman Durango, CO.
Ryan Hix built this locally owned and operated business around a simple idea: homeowners should have someone they can call when their home needs skilled attention. Too many people have dealt with unanswered calls, unclear expectations, or work that had to be corrected later. We wanted to offer a different experience, one built around personal service and getting the details right the first time.
Today, we put that approach into our residential remodeling and home improvement work. Bathroom Remodeling is a major part of what we do, along with bathroom additions, tile repair, and tile installation. Each project begins with listening. We want to know what bothers you about the current space, what you hope to change, and how the room needs to work for your household.
Being a small local business allows us to stay personally involved. We’re not interested in treating one home like the next or pushing the same answer on every homeowner. A cracked shower tile calls for a different conversation than an outdated bathroom or plans for an entirely new bath.
Our consistent 5-star customer ratings reflect the relationships we’ve built through careful work and straightforward communication. We value those relationships because this work happens in the places where people live every day.
For us, a successful project comes down to doing what we said we would do, paying attention while we’re there, and leaving homeowners glad they trusted us with their space.
Our Values
Listen Before We Work
Good work begins before a tool comes out. Ryan Hix and our team want to hear what you’re trying to change and why it matters in your day-to-day life. Maybe stepping into the current tub has become inconvenient. Perhaps the bathroom feels cramped, the tile is showing its age, or you simply need another bathroom for a growing household. Those details help us understand the job from your point of view.
We don’t believe every homeowner needs the same answer. Listening first gives us a better understanding of the room, the work involved, and what you expect from the finished project.
That conversation also gives you an opportunity to ask questions before decisions are made. We can talk about the parts of the project we handle and what may be involved based on the work you have in mind. It’s a straightforward approach, but it matters. Your home is personal, and we believe the conversation about changing it should be personal too.
Small details have a way of showing up in the finished work. Tile layout, surface preparation, trim, grout lines, fixture placement, and finishing touches may seem like individual parts of a project, but together they shape how the room looks and feels once the work is done.
Our 36 years of hands-on experience have taught us not to rush past those details.
That matters across the work we perform. A tile repair should address the problem area carefully. New tile needs thoughtful preparation and layout. A bathroom remodel involves many individual pieces that have to come together in one room. A bathroom addition needs to feel like a useful part of the home rather than an afterthought.
We approach each job with the goal of getting it right the first time. That means paying attention to what’s in front of us, respecting the homeowner’s property, and giving each stage of the work the care it requires.
Home improvement can feel unnecessarily complicated when homeowners aren’t sure what is happening with their project. We prefer straightforward conversations.
We explain the work in everyday language, answer questions, and talk through what you want to accomplish. You shouldn’t need to sort through vague terminology just to understand what is happening in your own home.
Clear communication is especially important during bathroom work because the room often plays such a large role in a household’s daily routine. Changes to showers, tubs, flooring, vanities, tile, or fixtures can affect how the space is used while the work is underway. Talking through the project helps everyone stay on the same page.
Our small-business approach makes those conversations personal. You’re not simply another project on a list. We want you to feel comfortable asking questions and discussing concerns as they come up. Good communication doesn’t replace good workmanship, but we believe the two should always go together.
No two homes ask exactly the same thing of us. Even similar bathroom projects can involve different layouts, existing materials, surfaces, fixtures, or homeowner priorities. We take those differences seriously instead of approaching every job with a preset answer.
Sometimes the goal is a larger change, such as replacing an outdated bathroom or adding a new one. Other times, the homeowner simply wants cracked tile repaired, worn grout addressed, or a backsplash installed correctly. The scope may change, but our attention to the home does not.
Personal service is one of the reasons we value being a small, locally owned and operated business. It gives us the opportunity to look closely at the work in front of us and understand what the homeowner actually wants from it.
We want the finished work to make sense in your home. That starts with treating your property, priorities, and project as their own rather than another version of the last job.
